An industrial reactor is more than a vessel in which materials are mixed. It is the equipment where reaction chemistry, heat transfer, agitation, temperature, pressure and residence time come together to achieve the required product quality and conversion.
The right reactor design therefore starts with understanding the reaction.
At CentPro Engineering, we design and manufacture customised industrial reactors for chemical, pharmaceutical, speciality chemical, petrochemical, food and process industries. Our engineering approach considers the complete reaction requirement before finalising reactor geometry, agitation system, heating or cooling arrangement and Material of Construction.
Reaction Conditions Define the Reactor
Every reaction has its own operating requirements. Reaction time, temperature, pressure, feed composition, viscosity and required conversion influence reactor design.
For batch processes, the required batch time and production cycle determine the working volume and operating sequence. The reactor must provide sufficient capacity for charging, reaction, sampling, discharge and cleaning while maintaining consistent process conditions from batch to batch.
For temperature-sensitive or exothermic reactions, precise temperature control becomes even more important.
Agitation Is a Process Requirement
Mixing is not simply about rotating an impeller. The agitation system must provide the required flow pattern, shear, circulation and mass transfer for the specific process.
Impeller selection depends on factors such as viscosity, solids concentration, liquid level, gas dispersion and reaction characteristics. A low-viscosity liquid may require a completely different mixing arrangement from a high-viscosity speciality chemical or slurry.
The agitator, shaft, impeller and baffles are therefore designed around the actual process conditions.
Heat Transfer Controls Reaction Performance
Many reactions require controlled heating or cooling throughout the batch.
Heating may be provided through a jacket, limpet coil or external heat-transfer system, while cooling may be required to control exothermic reactions or maintain product stability.
The required heat-transfer area depends on reaction heat generation, batch volume, temperature difference, fluid properties and cycle time. Proper thermal design helps prevent temperature excursions and ensures the reaction progresses under controlled conditions.
Pressure and Vacuum Must Be Considered
Some processes operate under vacuum, positive pressure or elevated temperature. These conditions influence the mechanical design, vessel thickness, heads, nozzles, seals and overall reactor configuration.
Vacuum operation may be required for solvent removal or low-temperature processing, while pressurised operation may be necessary for specific chemical reactions. The reactor must therefore be mechanically designed for the actual operating and design conditions.
Material Compatibility Protects Process Integrity
The reactor's Material of Construction (MOC) must be compatible with the chemicals, temperature and operating environment.
Depending on the application, CentPro designs reactors in SS304, SS316L, Duplex, Super Duplex and Titanium, where required. Material selection considers corrosion resistance, chemical compatibility, temperature and cleaning requirements.
From Reaction Data to Complete Reactor Design
A reliable reactor brings together process design, mixing, heat transfer and mechanical engineering.
CentPro Engineering supports reactor projects from process evaluation and sizing to agitator selection, thermal design, mechanical design, fabrication, testing and commissioning. Our reactors can be engineered for capacities ranging from laboratory and pilot applications to large-scale industrial production.
For reactors up to 100 KL, CentPro undertakes in-house manufacturing, while larger requirements can be supported through suitable site-fabrication arrangements.
