Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD) Manufacturer in Pune, India

An Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD) dries concentrated liquids and pumpable slurries by spreading the material across a heated surface using a rotating rotor and wiper assembly. Centpro Engineering, based in Hadapsar, Pune, designs ATFD systems for thermal Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plants and industrial processes where conventional drying methods may be unsuitable. Selection depends on feed composition, solids content, thermal stability and the required final product condition.

How an ATFD Works

The feed enters a vertical, jacketed cylindrical shell heated by steam or thermal oil. A rotating assembly distributes the material into a thin film along the heated inner wall. Moisture or solvent evaporates, vapour exits through the vapour outlet, and the remaining solids or residue are discharged from the bottom.

The thin film provides effective heat transfer and relatively short residence time. An ATFD is commonly installed downstream of an evaporator or crystallizer, where the feed has already been concentrated.

ATFD for Viscous and High-Solids Concentrates

ATFD systems can be considered for suitable viscous, salt-bearing and fouling-prone concentrates. However, they do not guarantee a free-flowing dry powder from every feed.

Performance depends on:

  • Feed solids and viscosity: These influence throughput, film formation and discharge.

  • Material behaviour: Sticky or gummy products can accumulate on the heated surface.

  • Thermal stability: Heat-sensitive materials may require controlled temperatures or vacuum operation.

  • Salt characteristics: Hygroscopic or low-melting salts may soften or retain moisture.

  • Heating and vapour handling: The system must suit the required evaporation duty and vapour treatment.

Representative sample testing is advisable when product behaviour or final dryness is uncertain.

Key Design Considerations

Centpro evaluates heat-transfer area, rotor and wiper configuration, heating medium, material of construction, feed pumping, vapour condensation and residue discharge. Corrosive feeds may require suitable alloys, while solvent-bearing materials need appropriate vapour recovery and safety provisions.

Industrial Applications

ATFD systems may be used for:

  • Final drying of evaporator concentrates in thermal ZLD plants

  • Pharmaceutical and API process residues

  • Chemical and specialty chemical slurries

  • Textile and dye industry concentrates

  • Salt-bearing residues and process solids recovery

ATFD Integration with ZLD Systems

An ATFD is often one stage in a larger treatment scheme rather than a standalone solution. Depending on the feed, upstream equipment may include a Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE), MVR/MVRE evaporator, forced circulation evaporator or crystallizer. The overall process is selected according to effluent characteristics, recovery objectives and residue-handling requirements.

Why Choose Centpro Engineering?

Centpro approaches ATFD selection as part of the complete concentration and drying process. Feed characteristics, heat transfer, materials, vapour management and solids discharge are considered together to support practical operation. Centpro provides process engineering, equipment manufacturing, supply, installation and commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is an ATFD used for?
It dries concentrated liquids and slurries, particularly as a final drying stage in suitable ZLD and industrial process applications.

2. Does an ATFD always produce dry powder?
No. The output may be powder, flakes, granules or a pasty residue depending on material properties and operating conditions.

3. What heating media are used in an ATFD?
Steam and thermal oil are common options. Selection depends on the required operating temperature and process conditions.

4. Can an ATFD handle pharmaceutical residues?
Potentially, yes. Feed composition, solvent content, thermal sensitivity, corrosion and the required product condition must be evaluated.

5. Can an ATFD be integrated into a ZLD plant?
Yes. It can be used downstream of suitable concentration equipment to reduce the volume of liquid residue and produce a more manageable solid or semi-solid output.
